My background, in a nutshell:
I provide innovative writing and editing for professional societies, the federal government, commercial clients, and academic institutions. Among my clients: the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, AARP, 3M Corporation, the Optical Society of America, the American Pharmacists Association, and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
I've also published more than a hundred articles in news magazines related to the laser and fiber optics industry including BioOptics World, Photonics Spectra, BioPhotonics International, and Optics & Photonics News.
In addition to science, technology, and medicine, I've written about trends in higher education relating to women and minorities. During my four-year tenure as editor of On Campus With Women, a quarterly newsletter produced by the American Association of Colleges and Universities, we redesigned the newsletter and discussed key issues affecting women in higher education such as promotion, minority status, and work/family balance.
I began my career with the Optical Society of America in 1990 as a staff writer for OSA's news magazine Optics & Photonics News. I learned about optics and photonics from the leading researchers in the field while writing news and feature articles for the magazine. Three years later I was appointed managing editor of the magazine and directed the first major redesign of Optics & Photonics News in nearly a decade.
In addition, I guided all aspects of OSA’s media relations including the development of the society’s web site and marketing for major technical conferences: the Conference on Lasers and Electro-optics (CLEO), the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC), and OSA’s Annual Meeting. In its first year, the web site earned a "3-Star" rating from the McKinley Review.
